We're still writing chapters, but I think the key is just demanding everyone's best and holding to a standard. What is this year's group's best? I don't know. Because I've been doing it for 23 years, there's sometimes the best they're capable of playing would be like 80th in the country. And at the end of the day or season, the only thing that I care about is did this group play the best it's capable of playing. He's got a lot to learn though."ĭefensive coordinator Joe Rossi: "I agree with you each year is its own year. ![]() He's gonna be one of the best, eventually. If he wants to waste away his education on being a college football coach. And you know that from when he played.but I've already been on record about Mariano. And I don't got time to teach it to them. A lot of times the interns that come in that are unpaid volunteers, they don't know the defense. We have interns, and he slides into that role.so he'll be invaluable for us because he knows the defense. I went and found Coach, and he was like, let's go. He called me and asked me what I thought, and I said, "When can you get here?" He said Sunday, and I told him I'd talked to Coach Fleck. But with his situation, he had some injuries and things like that. And the first one was Winston (DeLattiboudere), and he lasted a little longer on his NFL dream than Mariano. There's been two guys I've talked with and I tell them that, when you want to coach, just let me know. ![]() But if you've seen a practice this week like I have, you know he's working at it."ĭefensive coordinator Joe Rossi: "Well, this is the second time this has happened. And he can be a little bit cleaner in his communication. I think he can play better in the run game. So it's not a surprise and he can play better. But when it's Nubin, well, that's one of the best players in the country who's getting on me. Because I'm just Rossi, and that's what he does. It's more powerful to a young player when it comes from an older player than when it comes from me. Nubin says, and we've heard it all the time. He tried to take some things off of, quite frankly, my plate sometimes because I don't have to say it. He's made good plays for us before, but I've just been really impressed with his his leadership and how he's kind of taking it to the next level. Now Cody's doing a great job coaching on the sideline, but he's not out there. But Nubin made some really good plays. And being kind of that calming force with Cody not playing in the last one.there was a little bit more on Tyler shoulders from the big picture. And just being a mentor for the older guys. ![]() He went out and made plays for us last year, but the thing that I've been really excited about is just how he's been leading the defense. How do we know that? Because of how he works, how he practices, how he studies film, and how each coach in the young guys. ![]() Like, there was no doubt that Nubin was gonna take a step forward. And now he's kind of on cruise control, and you may even see a guy take a step back. We still got a lot of games to play.īut there's always been instances throughout college football where you see maybe a guy comes back when he had a chance for the NFL. Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi: "It's just the next step.
